This report explains regulations governing the use of psychotropic medication with children in the child welfare system in Michigan. It begins by explaining that the use of psychotropic medication as part of a foster child’s comprehensive mental health treatment plan may be beneficial, however, the administration of psychotropic medication to children is not an arbitrary decision and documented oversight is required to protect children’s health and well-being. Rules are then listed that address requirements for steps that must be taken prior to prescribing psychotropic medications, psychotropic medication informed consent, authority to consent, informed consent exceptions, criteria for the administration of psychotropic medications due to urgent medical need, monitoring, and required documentation.
