Focus on the Figures is a regular partnership between The Imprint and KidsData.org, a nonprofit dedicated to providing data on the health and well-being of California’s children. Mental health is critical to equipping young people for the challenges of growing up and living as healthy adults.

Focus on the Figures is a regular partnership between The Imprint and KidsData.org, a nonprofit dedicated to providing data on the health and well-being of California’s children. Sometimes referred to as “disconnected youth,” older teens who are neither in school nor working are more likely than other youth to struggle with mental illness or substance abuse, encounter violence and become teen parents.

The U.S. foster care system is structured to provide temporary, safe living arrangements and therapeutic services for children who cannot remain safely at home due to child maltreatment or for children whose parents are unable to provide adequate care.

Our reporting shows that one in five California foster youth will be moved out of the county they originally called home. The “net exporting” counties like San Francisco, where we see as many as 60 percent of foster youth crossing county lines...

Because of its effectiveness in reducing adverse birth outcomes, reducing disparities in access to prenatal care and improving access to timely care for all women has been a U.S. public health priority for the past two decades.
