The National Center for Youth Law hired from within its ranks to replace its longtime leader, John O’Toole, who retired this summer after 35 years. Jesse Hahnel took the helm as NCYL‘s fifth executive director in its 45-year history.

O’Toole to Retire after 35 Years at Nat’l Center for Youth Law

After more than three decades at the California-based National Center for Youth Law, John O’Toole announced today that he would retire this summer. “While I still love my work, I want to leave while I’m healthy so that my wife Jean and I can enjoy ourselves and do the things we don’t have time for now,” said O’Toole, in a statement issued by NYCL today.

Katie A. Part Two: Sun Sets, Perhaps Prematurely, on State Settlement

Yesterday, we began a three-part look at Katie A. v Bonta, a class-action lawsuit over mental health services for California children involved in the child welfare system. Los Angeles County settled with plaintiffs in 2003; the state settled on behalf of the other 57 counties in 2011.
