President Trump’s fiscal 2021 budget asks Congress to allow Medicaid dollars to be spent on a newly created class of residential foster care, a move that it expects to open up half a billion dollars for mental health treatment over the next decade.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is testing a new approach to services for Medicaid-eligible youth aimed at catching behavioral and physical health problems earlier. CMS, which oversees the two massive health care entitlements at the Department of Health and Human Services, plans to use up to eight sites around the country to test the Integrated Care for Kids (InCK) model.

California counties will now be able to offer a therapeutic treatment model in a supportive family setting through its Medi-Cal services, thanks to an agreement with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
