Seattle-based nonprofit Treehouse is planning to scale up its program to boost the high school graduation rates of foster youth in Washington over the next five years. Treehouse’s Graduation Success program matches “education specialists” with foster youth in high schools.

California Expands Community College Assistance for Current, Former Foster Youth

Since 2015, California has offered $15 million in community college assistance — including tutoring, transportation and housing support — to kids in foster care who are age 16 to 26. Senate Bill 12, one of the 859 bills signed into law this session by California Gov.

West Virginia College for Current, Former Foster Youths to Open in 2018

After several years of planning, a nonprofit child welfare service provider is preparing to launch the nation’s first-ever college for foster youth. KVC Health Systems plans to open its yet-to-be-named campus in January 2018 in Montgomery, West Virginia.

    Higher Achievement Nabs $1.9M After-School/Summer Grant

    The New York Life Foundation just announced a nearly $2 million investment to boost after-school and summer programs in several Mid-Atlantic Cities. Higher Achievement, a 41-year-old nonprofit based in D.C., will receive $1.89 million to serve youths in Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Richmond, Va.

    The California-based Taco Bell Foundation for Teens has made an unprecedented, $30 million commitment to the Atlanta-based Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) with a goal of raising the national graduation rate by 13 percent.
