The Board of The California Wellness Foundation has approved 72 grants, totaling close to $8 million. Grants cover core issue areas including: Diversity in the Health Professions, Environmental Health, Healthy Aging, Mental Health, Teenage Pregnancy Prevention, Violence Prevention, Women’s Health, and Work and Health.
This quarter the Foundation awarded close to $2 million for a cluster of grants under “Special Projects”, to address health care access under the Affordable Care Act. The following grants have been awarded to California-based organizations to serve youth:
Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland, Oakland, $75,000 over one year for core operating support for the Community Health & Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success program to continue to provide comprehensive health professions pipeline programming for underrepresented minority high school students in Alameda County.
Esperanza Youth and Family Center, Coachella, $75,000 over one year for core operating support for the Environmental Youth Alliance to engage in environmental health education, leadership training and public policy efforts.
Cal State Bakersfield Foundation / Educational Opportunity Program, Bakersfield, $85,000 over one year for core operating support for the Educational Opportunity Program’s Guardian Scholars Program to sustain supportive services for current and former foster youth enrolled at California State University, Bakersfield.
California Coalition for Youth, Sacramento, $75,000 over one year for core operating support to sustain California Youth Crisis Line counseling and referral services for, and public policy efforts on behalf of, homeless, runaway and other at-risk youth in California.
California State University, Fresno Foundation / Educational Opportunity Program, Fresno, $75,000 over one year for core operating support for the Educational Opportunity Program to sustain its Renaissance Scholars Program supportive services for current and former foster youth enrolled at California State University, Fresno.
Community Initiatives / John Burton Foundation for Children Without Homes, San Francisco, $75,000 over one year for core operating support for the John Burton Foundation for Children Without Homes to sustain public policy and technical assistance activities to improve the health and well-being of foster-connected transition-age youth in California.
CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation / Educational Opportunity Program, San Bernardino, $75,000 over one year for core operating support for the Educational Opportunity Program to sustain Foster Youth Program supportive services for current and former foster youth enrolled at California State University, San Bernardino.
Pathways to Your Future / South Los Angeles Homeless TAY and Foster Care Collaborative, Carson, $50,000 over one year for project support for the South Los Angeles Homeless TAY and Foster Care Collaborative to build the collaborative’s capacity to address transition-age youth homelessness in South Los Angeles.
South Bay Community Services, Chula Vista, $100,000 over one year for core operating support for the Youth in Transition Program to sustain supportive housing, case management and other supportive services for transition-age foster and homeless youth in southwest San Diego County.
Community Development Technologies Center, Los Angeles, $150,000 over one year for core operating support to continue providing financial literacy programs to help low-income parenting teens in South Los Angeles gain economic security for their families as a strategy to prevent repeat teen pregnancies.
Fresno Barrios Unidos, Fresno, $50,000 over one year for core operating support to sustain teenage pregnancy prevention programming serving youth in southeast Fresno.
Planned Parenthood-Orange & San Bernardino Counties, Orange, $75,000 over one year for core operating support to sustain reproductive health telephone hotlines and online services to increase access to medically accurate reproductive health information for underserved youth in Orange County.
Public Counsel, Los Angeles, $75,000 over one year for core operating support to continue to inform policymakers and opinion leaders about public policies affecting pregnant and parenting youth in Los Angeles County.
Spirit Awakening Foundation, Marina Del Rey, $75,000 over one year for core operating support to continue to provide mentoring and health and wellness services to incarcerated young girls in Los Angeles County as a teenage pregnancy prevention strategy.
Teen Success, Milpitas, $50,000 over one year for core operating support to provide peer support services for parenting teens in Fresno, Tulare and Kern counties to help prevent repeat teenage pregnancies.
TeenNow California, Lemon Grove, $60,000 over one year for core operating support to inform policymakers and opinion leaders about teenage pregnancy prevention programs, as well as programs and services that support pregnant and parenting teens.
Boys and Girls Clubs of the North Valley, Chico, $50,000 over one year for core operating support to sustain a re-entry program targeting incarcerated youth in Butte County Juvenile Hall as a re-entry strategy.
National Council on Crime and Delinquency , Oakland, $195,000 over one year for core operating support to inform policymakers and opinion leaders on issues related to criminal and juvenile justice, violence prevention and community safety.
New Directions for Youth, North Hollywood, $50,000 over one year for core operating support to continue after-school programming and support services, as a violence prevention strategy, for youth residing in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
Prevention Institute, Oakland, $90,000 over one year for core operating support to continue to inform policymakers and opinion leaders about strategies to address prevention of youth violence as a public health issue in California.
Toberman Neighborhood Center, San Pedro, $50,000 over one year for core operating support to continue after-school programming and support services, as a violence prevention strategy, for youth residing in the San Pedro/Harbor City and Wilmington/Harbor Gateway regions of Los Angeles.
VMC Foundation, San Jose, $100,000 over one year for project support to continue a pilot study to develop personal health records for incarcerated youth in Santa Clara County to assist with re-entry into their communities after detention.
Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, $100,000 over one year for core operating support for the Community Health Workers Program, which links underserved children and families to health care and dental services in Sonoma County.
Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, $425,000 over one year and six months for project support to develop and implement a system to serve individuals and families in Los Angeles County who will remain uninsured or ineligible for coverage during the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and beyond.
