The PepsiCo Foundation has announced a $2.5 million grant to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). This represents the largest gift CHCI has received in its 40-year history. The organization, established in 1978 by Hispanic members of congress, works to develop the next generation of Latino leaders.
The cornerstone of CHCI are paid 2-3 month public policy internships and 9-month fellowships for Latino students and college graduates from across the country. Fellows receive hands-on work experience in the White House, federal agencies and/or national nonprofit organizations, as well as leadership training, community service experience, and networking among Hispanic leaders. Fellowships focus on international affairs, economic development, health and education policy, housing, or local government.
The grant will expand the fellowship and intern program, allowing more Hispanic youth to gain leadership experience. Pepsico’s gift will support three additional graduate fellows and two public policy fellows in CHCI’s 2014-2015 class.
The grant will also help fund the 21st Century Leadership Center, the new home for CHCI’s programs and staff.
“We commend CHCI on its tremendous efforts to educate, develop and empower Latino youth and we’re proud to support this important organization,” said Al Carey in a statement, CEO of PepsiCo Americas Beverages and executive sponsor of PepsiCo’s Latino and Hispanic employee group, Adelante. “PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation are committed to helping CHCI further its mission and its 21st Century Leadership Center.”
