According to a new report from the Community Service Society, foster youth face daunting challenges to attending college and other post-secondary education programs in the state of New York. Report authors Apurva Mehrotra and Lazar Treschan estimate that fewer than a quarter of college-aged foster youth are enrolled in higher education, compared with 60 percent of similar public-school students in the state.
In suggesting the creation of a state-wide initiative designed to spur greater involvement in the higher education process for college-age foster youth in New York, the report looks at the success of efforts in other states. Financial aid and supportive programs may be effective for foster youth in the state based on the experiences of California, Michigan, North Carolina, and other states.
