A new report from a coalition of child welfare advocacy groups, circuit courts and law enforcement organizations in Michigan found that minority children are more likely to participate and remain in the state’s foster care system. Minority children in Michigan are also twice as likely to age out of the foster care system than their white counterparts.
The study, Key Findings and Recommendations of the Michigan Race Equity Coalition, found that the racial disproportionality of Michigan’s child welfare system is in line with similar national studies. Led by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Mary Beth Kelly and ex-state Rep. Lynn Jondahl, the coalition recommends that programming and systems-change efforts should be data driven and that the child welfare system in the state should create a cultural competency-cultural humility training curriculum.
