A new report from the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare at the University of Minnesota studied the effect of differential response on outcomes related to child protection and racial equity. “Examining the Impact of Differential Response on Racial Equity “ looked at populations who are over-represented in Minnesota’s child welfare system, including African American, multiracial and Native American children.
Differential response, or family assessment response as it’s known in Minnesota, was found to have addressed some disparities in the state’s child welfare system, though benefits may not be enjoyed equally for all populations. Multiracial children experienced greater risk for lower outcomes. The report underscore the need to more clearly understand the experiences of Native American and multiracial children, who have not been well represented in literature on child welfare.
