The need exists for DV treatment services for people impacted by intimate partner violence or cohabitant abuse. DV services provide evaluation and intervention to DV offenders. Additionally, DV services provide comprehensive behavioral health care to adult and children/youth survivors impacted by intimate partner violence or cohabitant abuse. When DV services are accessible and evidence-based, safety improves.
The State of Utah defines domestic violence (DV) as any criminal offense involving violence or physical harm or threat of violence or physical harm, or any attempt, conspiracy, or solicitation to commit a criminal offense involving violence or physical harm, when committed by one cohabitant against another.
DV not only affects those who are abused, but also has a substantial effect on family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses, and the community at large. Children who grow up witnessing DV are among those seriously affected by this crime. Childhood exposure to DV has been recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as a significant adverse childhood experience associated with heightened risk of chronic illness and intergenerational DV. Social and emotional support drawn from evidence-based principles can help interrupt the cycle of violence and support resilience in people impacted by DV.
