The Department of Justice is taking applications from states for funding aimed at furthering an ongoing reinvestment project.
BJA, in a public/private partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts, launched the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) in 2010 as a multi-staged process in which a jurisdiction increases the cost-effectiveness of its criminal justice system and reinvests savings into high-performing public safety strategies.
The solicitation lists eight possible uses for the funding, including:
- Targeting local systems that feed a high volume of offenders into prison
- Substance abuse, mental health, and reentry services
- Scaling up graduate sanctions programs
