In a Nutshell:
The Zellerbach family has deep roots in the San Francisco Bay area where Anthony Zellerbach founded his own paper business, A. Zellerbach & Sons, in 1876. Isadore joined his father’s company in 1888 and would be the major force behind the company (which changed its name to The Zellerbach Paper Company in 1907), until his death in 1941.
Originally named the Zellerbach Family Fund, The Zellerbach Family Foundation was established in 1956 by Mrs. Jennie B. Zellerbach (wife of Isadore) with a contribution of $54,600. Mrs. Zellerbach continued to make regular contributions to the Foundation and upon her death in 1965, her will provided additional resources.
From its inception, the Foundation has focused on the San Francisco Bay Area. It began as a family foundation, supporting the interests of the donor, however, over time it has evolved into more of a general purpose foundation. Today, the foundation has a diverse board, a strategic approach to grantmaking and a focus programmatically and geographically on identifiable community problems.
The Mission of the Zellerbach Family Foundation is to be a catalyst for constructive social change by initiating and investing in efforts that strengthen families and communities. The foundation addresses a diverse range of issue areas and has distributed over $70 million dollars in charitable support.
