In a nutshell: The foundation, founded in 1930 by W.K. Kellogg, initially focused on education issues within Michigan. The foundation championed innovative education strategies such as the inclusion of children with disabilities alongside children without disabilities and outdoor education.
By the 1950’s, the foundation had grown considerably and focused on key areas of post-War concern: the need for more nurses and healthcare administrators, and the demand for more two-year, community colleges. The foundation continued to grow and by the 1980’s it was one of the largest foundations both nationally and internationally. By 2008, the foundation’s assets had reached more than $8 billion, from W.K. Kellogg’s initial investment of $66 million.
In 2007, the foundation refocused their work to more closely align with Kellogg’s original vision of helping vulnerable children. Within their youth work, includes a focus on dental health to those underserved, including native villages in Alaska. In 2010, the foundation launched the America Healing initiative, to support programs that promote racial healing and address racial inequity in the U.S. The foundation also invests in out-of-school, out-of-work young people, ages 16-24. The New Options Project uses innovation in alternative schools, community-based organizations, and work-training programs to enable young people to gain marketable skills.
