In a nutshell: Elbridge A. Stuart, founder of the Carnation Company, established the Elbridge Stuart Foundation in 1937. The foundation is dedicated to the protection, education and development of children and youth.

Today, the foundation focuses on education and child welfare issues, paying particular interest to vulnerable populations such as foster youth and the economically disadvantaged.

The foundation looks for programs to fund that have systemic and sustained change opportunities. Specifically, within education, funding includes programs that develop educational leaders (including district, school board and school site) , provide on-going student assessment,  continued learning for educators and innovations in technology.

Child welfare programs address gaps in services for foster youth, reunification services, utilization of multidisciplinary teams within child welfare, youth permanency, mental health issues among foster youth, youth engagement and educational support for foster youth. The Stuart family is still involved in the foundation’s grant making. Eldridge Stuart’s great-grandsons serve on the board.
