In a Nutshell: The Frey Foundation was founded by Grand Rapids civic leaders, Edward and Frances Frey in 1974 out of their love for community and commitment to philanthropy. The Foundation was endowed in 1988 after their deaths with the family’s banking and insurance fortune. Their focus has always been improving the lives of individuals, families, and organizations.
Today, the Frey family continues to be actively involved in the functioning and decision making at the foundation, holding trustee and board positions. The Frey Foundation is one of Michigan’s largest family foundations.
The Foundation seeks broad community support for all projects and, therefore, will consider funding only a portion of any proposed project expense. They believe projects which are broadly supported have the greatest likelihood for success. The 2012 grants relating to youth were given to a wide variety of subject areas including, Health, Education/ Out of School Time, and Family Support.
