In a nutshell: Atlantic Philanthropies was established in 1982 by Charles Feeney, a successful businessman. The foundation operated anonymously for its first 15 years, but went public in 1997 and now has made grants totalling more than $6.1 billion as of December 2011.
In 2002, the board agreed to become a limited life foundation. They will be concluding their grant making in 2016 and all operations by 2020. As a limited life foundation, they are investing in areas where the foundation believes can achieve significant progress in the relatively short time they have remaining.
The foundation’s Children and Youth account invests in initiatives that address reforms in school discipline policies, particularly those that disproportionately affect youth of color, and supports programs that expand health insurance for all U.S. children. The foundation also prioritizes the expansion of the community school model. Atlantic seeks to achieve sustainability for the initiative Elev8’s 20 community schools and 16 school-based health centers around the country.
