In a nutshell:
W. Clement Stone was born in 1902 and grew up to be a successful salesman – from selling newspapers to insurance policies. Using his talent and skills, he founded Combined Insurance Company of America, which turned into a multimillion dollar enterprise, Aon Corporation in the 1980s.
After meeting his wife-to-be, Jessie Verna Tarson, in 1923, Stone dedicated a large chunk of his time, alongside Tarson to philanthropy. In the early years of what would become the Stone Foundation, efforts focused on giving grants in the four areas of mental health, education, children/youth and religion. Tarson and Stone also focused on creating self-improvement projects in prisons as well as consulting services in management and positive mental attitude training for nonprofit organizations.
Since then, the Stone Foundation has shifted its attention to the areas of education, (with an emphasis on teacher quality and principal leadership), youth development, and early childhood development.
