In a nutshell: The Foundation began by The Nellie Mae Corporation (NMC), a nonprofit education-financing company in 1990, under the name the Fund for Education. At its inception, the foundation largely focused on college accessibility. In 1998, NMC was sold to Sallie Mae, creating the endowment for the Nellie Mae Foundation. In 2008, the foundation shifted their focus from college accessibility to their current direction, education systems change and student centered programs.
