In a nutshell: The trust was created in 1999 by a group of concerned stakeholders including young people, parents, caregivers, service providers, community leaders, school officials, corporate partners, foundations and federal and district government officials. They sought to improve services delivered to children and youth in the DC area, focusing on out of school hours.
The trust receives support from, and works in close partnership with, many local government agencies such as the Mayor’s office, Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the D.C. Department of Health and the City Council. It received $8 million over three years, starting in 2006, to help build the city’s array of after-school program options.
