In a nutshell: The Foundation was created in 1948 by one of the founders of UPS, Jim Casey, and his siblings. They named the foundation for their mother.
The Foundation’s primary mission is to foster public policies, human services, and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of vulnerable children and families. It is one of the largest foundations in the U.S. The Foundation invests in long term, innovative programs. The foundation is currently led by Patrick McCarthy, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Their current strategies include direct services for children and families that are designed and delivered by the foundation through the Casey Family Services arm. Founded in 1976, Casey Family Services (CFS), headquartered in New Haven, Conn., provides high quality foster care services to children under state contracts in Maryland, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. However, Casey Family Services is scheduled to end operations by June 30, 2013. This change reflects a strategic shift by the foundation to partner with large diverse human service agencies for a greater impact to the child welfare field. They are not currently accepting any new clients.
They also direct investments to reforming public human services and systems, as well as providing strategic consulting services to leaders of public human service systems. One of their major education initiatives, has been to support charter and small public schools as well as increasing access to informal and formal neighborhood programs that support school readiness.
