In a nutshell:
Benjamin Altman created the foundation in his will upon his death in 1913. Altman’s dry goods store, B. Altman & Co., founded in 1865 in New York City, became a major department store. Altman has a proven record of generosity to the city of New York in life as well as in death.
Today, the Trustees have refined its guidelines in the four areas that were of concern to Altman: education, health, strengthening communities, and arts and culture.
The Altman foundation works within the arena of education, focusing on school hours and out of school time. Programs that are funded give disadvantaged youth opportunities for quality education such as after school programs/summer enrichment, early childhood programs, parental participation, access to independent/high quality schools, and college prep and retention.
