The Academy Awards are still four months away, with nominations scheduled for mid-January. But it appears that the film “Short Term 12,” a tale of life in a foster care group home, could receive nominations in at least two categories.
An Oscar prediction spread in this week’s Entertainment Weekly lists young actor Keith Stanfield as a top candidate for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Marcus, a teenager living in a short-term group home as he prepares to age out of the foster care system.
EW also speculates that Brie Larson could be a dark-horse candidate for Best Actress for her portrayal of Grace, a social worker at Short Term 12 that battles her own experience with abuse as she strives to help the home’s young residents.
Yahoo! entertainment writer Thelma Adams concurred that Larson is a candidate for Best Actress, a category crowded with star power this season. Indie Wire‘s Oliver Lyttleton says Stanfield deserves serious consideration for his performance.Click here to read The Imprint‘s broader analysis of Short Term 12, which debuted in theaters over the summer.John Kelly is the editor-in-chief of The Imprint
