Medical Neglect Webinar

October 8, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Child Neglect accounts for the majority of referrals to child protective services. The prevalence of medical neglect, defined as the failure of a caregiver to provide appropriate health care to the child, is not easily estimated as the diagnosis is not straightforward as neglect occurs along a spectrum from grossly inadequate to optimal medical care. Medical providers and investigators need to understand and balance the medical condition, risk of harm, long-term complications from inadequate treatment, and benefits of treatment as well as the role of individual, family and community factors. Referrals to Child Protective Services may be indicated to ensure appropriate medical care when medical neglect or noncompliance is identified and there is a risk of harm from medical complications. Clear communication and collaboration between members of multidisciplinary team can create a positive process and benefit the child & family.
