After a longer-than-expected search, the Children’s Home Society of Washington (CHSW) announced last week that Dave Newell will succeed Sharon Osborne, its leader of 35 years.
Newell, who will officially take the helm on June 10, has for the past nine years served as CEO of PromiseShip, a child welfare services provider based in Omaha, Neb. In addition to his time at PromiseShip, Newell worked with EMQ Families First in Sacramento, Calif., and before that was executive director at Denali Family Services in Anchorage, Alaska.
Osborne – who announced her plans to retire in 2017, with an eye on a 2018 transition – joined CHSW in 1989. She has served as board chair for Children’s Home Society of America, the national organization and advocacy arm for the state and local sites. Among its endeavors is the Wicked Problems Institute, an annual convening between researchers and practitioners to discuss complex issues in the child welfare arena.
“As I step down as president and CEO, I know CHSW’s future is in the best hands possible,” Osborne said. “Dave is an innovative problem-solver and strategist who will continue to advance CHSW’s efforts to transform the field of child and family services and improve the lives of those we serve.”
