In February 2022, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed his child welfare agency to consider gender-affirming health care for minors child abuse, placing doctors and parents at risk of CPS investigations. The announcement drew a swift rebuke from the White House, which called the new decree a “cynical and dangerous campaign targeting transgender children and their parents.”
One therapist who works with traumatized youth in foster care and also has a trans child decided she had to shift her clients to other colleagues in order to prevent becoming a target.
Since Abbott’s February decree, Alabama has made gender-affirming care a felony and Florida’s medical board has banned certain procedures. But California passed a law guaranteeing trans youth refuge in the state.
