Marybeth Zeman, author of Tales of a Jailhouse Librarian: Challenging the Juvenile Justice System One Book at a Time, has become an advocate for the incarcerated since assuming a position as transitional counselor at the Nassau County jail. There, she transformed her experiences as a highly creative and talented educator with her credentials as a librarian and created a rolling school library which has changed her life as well as the lives of her students. Her book cart and her students appetite for reading symbolize the need to seek alternatives to incarceration. She believes that "if you put a book in a student's hand, he will be less likely to pick up a gun." Educate, don't incarcerate.
