Organizational Summary

Fostering Media Connections (FMC) is a nonprofit news organization uses the power of media and journalism to lead the conversation about children, youth and families in America.

We publish two distinct platforms: The Imprint, a daily news site dedicated to rigorous, in-depth journalism focused on families and the systems that impact their lives; and Fostering Families Today, a print and online magazine that educates and inspires the community of kinship, foster and adoptive families. We also offer a journalism training program for youth who have experienced the foster care or juvenile justice systems.

Position Purpose and Summary

The business development manager’s primary function is to cultivate relationships with public and private entities across the nation, ultimately selling subscriptions to and sponsorships in FMC publications. The business development manager is also responsible for securing sponsorships for special events, single-issue magazines and webinars, and providing assistance to current subscribers.

Job Duties

  • Networking within child welfare, foster family agency, and adoption communities
  • Proactively approaches prospective clients through phone calls, emails and in-person meetings on a daily basis, ensuring an active pipeline of at least 50 prospects at all times
  • Captures and keeps client information up to date in Salesforce by recording all activities, transactions, and communications with clients
  • Responsible for subscription and sponsorship renewals and achieving renewal retention goals
  • Provide clients with proposals for sponsorship products or services
  • Prepare and deliver sales presentations to new and existing clients
  • Travels to and exhibits at conferences and events, as needed
  • ·      Advises FMC team regarding advertising packages and pricing
  • Informs clients of available options for sponsorship art, formats, or features and provide samples
  • Collects artwork from sponsors and manages campaigns
  • Delivers sponsorship or illustration proofs to clients for approval
  • Provides performance reports to advertisers
  • Prepares promotional plans, sales literature, media kits, and sales contracts


  • Identify potential clients to offer sponsorship and subscription opportunities
  • Conduct national research to gather information on prospective clients
  • Create and maintain a database of prospective and current clients
  • Track developments in the field related to child welfare


  • Enroll agencies in subscription/sponsorship products, including the creation of user accounts
  • Process all correspondence and related to accounts; communicate with AR regarding invoices
  • Ensure print mailing lists are kept current
  • Provide customer service to subscribers as needed via email and phone

Skills & Qualifications

  • Personal or professional experience with adoption, child welfare or youth justice systems preferred
  • Must be able to travel periodically to conferences, events and meetings with clients
  • Must possess strong communication skills
  • Must demonstrate initiative
  • Must have strong organizational skills
  • Must demonstrate self-confidence and sensitivity when calling potential clients
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Suite
  • Working knowledge of SalesForce
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Compensation and Benefits

The business development manager will earn a base salary and will have the opportunity to earn bonuses, based on performance.
